In the state of North Carolina, everyone over the age of 18 is a mandated reporter.

In situations where a suspicion of abuse, neglect, or exploitation are present, or following a disclosure by the child, a report must be made to Child Protective Services and Law Enforcement.

To make a report, there only has to be a “suspicion” of abuse/neglect. Reports can be made in “good faith” and detailed information is not needed. A Forensic Interview will get the details and reduce the number of times a child has to repeat the information.

A child made a disclosure. What do I do now?

1. Assure the child you are listening.
2. Find a private place to talk.
3. Listen openly and calmly with minimal interruptions.
4. Let them know it’s not their fault and they did the right thing by telling you.
5. Limit questioning to “Who, What, Where” and any safety concerns.
6. Report immediately to CPS and LE.
